It marks the issuance of the first radio broadcast license by the U.S. Commerce Department on this date in 1920 to Westinghouse for station KDKA in Pittsburgh.

Today is Navy Day
observed since 1922 on the birth date of Theodore Roosevelt who as a naval scholar and Assistant Secretary of the Navy is considered the “Father of the Modern Navy.”
It is also Cranky Co-Workers Day, a day to encourage crankiness at work. Does crankiness really need to be encouraged at work?
History 101: October 27, 1938: DuPont announces a name for its new synthetic yarn, "nylon."
Music History 101: October 27, 1975: Bruce Springsteen appeared simultaneously on the cover of "Time" and "Newsweek."
The 101 number one song of the day had a double connection to Houston but the way it turned out it would be hard to tell. First of all the title contained a reference to that Texas City and secondly, the song was first recorded by Cissy Houston, mother of Whitney Houston. It was at this point that it was suggested that the destination be changed to a nearby state and it was recorded that way. Shortly thereafter, it was also recorded by today’s featured group and they elected to keep the change also. On October 27th, 1973 it arrived at number one for Gladys Knight and the Pips – their 25th chart entry – and the first to reach number one – Midnight Train to Georgia.
