Today is Make Your Own Luck Day

…a day to take affirmative action to improve your life.

Unless they’re loaded, we don’t think that’s what this day is intended for.

It’s also National Dog Day.  Look for another adorable pooch that needs a new home tomorrow on 101gold.com and on the air at 101.1 FM just a little after 8.

On this date in 1920, the 19th amendment to the U. S. Constitution went into effect which guaranteed the right to vote for women.

The 101 number one song of the day was a mixed blessing for the one time bar band that got its start at New Jersey’s Rutgers University. People who liked the song usually didn’t like the concert the group performed.  It was written by group leader Elliott Lurie about a former high school friend of his whose name was Randy although that name never worked quite right in the actual song. Lurie described themselves as hard rockers whose on stage performance was high decibel and pretty raucous. The song that catapulted them to the top was heavily overdubbed with strings and horns. When people who came to see them because of their hit song often went away disappointed because of the disparity of styles. But for one brief moment in time they enjoyed being on top. That moment came on August 26, 1972 when their one hit record reached number one in America – here’s Looking Glass with the song that might have been called Randy but to them “Brandy” sounded better.

A new website is out to reveal the ugly truth about dating. TheUglyBugBall.co.uk advertises itself under the slogan “dating for the aesthetically challenged,” and claims to be the first of its kind: a matchmaking website for “ugly people.” TheUglyBugBall.com boasts a tongue-in-cheek style that attracted over 1,500 members in its first five days. “Instead of fishing in a small pool of prettiness and getting nowhere,” the site reads, “Dive into an ocean of uglies and have more choice.” The website is a stark contrast to BeautifulPeople.com, a dating database that only grants membership to those deemed physically attractive. Those rejected by BeautifulPeople.com may want to check out TheUglyBugBall.

The FDA approved the first birth control pill 50 years ago, and an estimated 12 million American women are currently on the pill. AskMen and Cosmopolitan conducted an online survey to find out if men would take birth control pills for guys. Sixty-eight percent of men said they would take them; 32% said no way. The survey also asked women if they would like their male partner to take them. Here’s what they discovered. Seventy-three percent said absolutely, while 27% said no.

Credit card debt in the US fell to its lowest level in eight years. Experts say with the bad economy people aren’t putting charges on their cards…and paying off their balances. The average American now owes $4,900 on their assorted credit cards – down from $5,700 a year ago.

Gone are the old days…when we used our Discover card…to make a payment on our Master Card.

Crocodile Dundee is stuck in Australia. Paul Hogan has a long-running feud with the Australian tax authorities – they say he owes millions of dollars in back taxes. He lives in California now – but went back to Australia for his mother’s funeral. As soon as he landed, the government slapped him with papers – saying he can’t leave the country until the matter is settled.

Apparently when you show him how much you pay in taxes…he whips out his bill and goes… ‘Now that’s a tax bill.’
