Here in Las Cruces, LCPS re-opened for the fall term. Thanks to Communications Director Jo Galvan for coming in to provide valuable info to ensure a smooth transition from summer to school. (To the extent such a thing is possible.)
It’s also back to school this week at NMSU and there’s a presidential inauguration as well – for Dr. Barbara Couture.
She and Dr. Janet Green who is head of the Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management Department at New Mexico State joined us in the 101 Gold studio to talk about all the related events.

The 101 number one song of the day was a rehash of an old Italian Love song and it became the biggest selling single of all time for one of the biggest selling solo artists of all time. Worldwide sales of the record were over 20 million. It was huge here in America but it was even bigger in England. Because of copyright disputes over the original song which dated back to 1901, the record’s release overseas was delayed. By the time it finally was released over there the anticipation was so great it debuted on the British charts at number one where it remained for 8 weeks. Here in the states it stayed on top for 5 weeks and that is where it was on August 16, 1960. The Italian love song was “O Sole Mio” and this is what that became: “It’s Now or Never”
It was 33 years ago today that Elvis died of a heart attack at the age of 42 – the same age his mother died, also of a heart attack.
Other stuff:
The President and his family spent a one-day vacation at the Gulf of Mexico over the weekend. While there, the President and his daughter swam in the gulf…and he declared the beaches open for business.
-Of course, they closed the beach so he could swim there…but you get the point.
According to new research…birth order in families turns out to be very important for your development later in life. First borns are typically smarter – while younger siblings get better grades in school and are more outgoing. The majority of US Presidents and Nobel Prize winners in science are first born children…along with 21 of the first 23 astronauts. But they say younger born children do better in school…perhaps because they grow up competing with older siblings.
-Or maybe because they don’t want to go home…because they know they’re going to get beat up.
In Sweden, speeding tickets are adjusted to the net worth of the speeder. So they may have set a new world record last week when a multi-millionaire was caught going over the speed limit. He could get a one-million dollar ticket!! Their previous record was only a quarter or a million bucks.
-I wish they’d do that here. If we got pulled over for speeding…they’d end up giving us money…
