A terrific dog -
And she (inexplicably named “Tex”) is at the Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley. She, like so many others there, needs a good home. Know of one?
Today is Diet Coke Day. The soft drink was introduced on this date in 1982. Today is Muffler Appreciation Day, a day to enjoy quiet vehicles.
Today in History 101: 1956 Dick Clark made his debut as host of "Bandstand" on a Philadelphia TV station. The name was changed to "American Bandstand" when it went to ABC.
Speaking of which – what person or act appeared on American Bandstand more than any other? Read on, the answer is right after the 101 Number One Song of the Day.
The 101 number one song of the day created a dividing line between all that came before and all that followed and it was recorded by a man once known as the “singing yodeler.” That was his first job for a band called the Downhomers. He soon moved on and formed his own band which went by the name of the Saddlemen which formed the core of the group for which he’d be most famous. Today’s 101 number one song of the day was recorded and released before several other songs which actually became hits but this one failed to catch on – at first. But later it was included under the opening credits for a movie starring Glenn Ford as a high school teacher confronted by violent students. The movie was “Blackboard Jungle.” This time, the song took off and rocketed to the top of the charts. It arrived on July 9th, 1955. The man responsible never achieved the superstardom of Elvis who was the known as the King of Rock and Roll, but to many, he was known as the “Father of Rock and Roll.” Today’s 101 number one song of the day is the first #1 rock 'n' roll song. It’s by Bill Haley and the Comets: Rock Around the Clock.
Now back to the person or group to appear on American Bandstand more than any other. Do you recognize this man?
It’s Freddie “Boom-Boom” Cannon and he appeared on “Bandstand” 110 times over the years. Wow! Who would have thought?
Other stuff…
Just because it’s so crazy and full of great pictures, here’s the latest from the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona (Tramplona, as KC calls it) Spain. Here’s one with the bull facing the camera, almost smiling, and it seems to be saying, “Look ma, I got one!”
We’re off to Las Cruces Country Club today to play in the annual Burger Time Tournament. It ought to be interesting. Channel 7 meteorologist Jorge Torres told us about his “first time” when the driver went 50 yards and the ball stayed on the tee.
Mike ordered a special driver for today’s game -
Have a great weekend!
