Summertime!

And the livin’ is easy.

summertime

Although the One Hundred and One Golden Days of summer began a month ago, summer officially began at 5:28 am mountain time this morning.  Appropriately, today’s high temperature is expected to reach 101.

Also, it’s National Daylight Appreciation Day; Stock Up on Antiperspirant Day; Baby Boomers Recognition Day.

Congrats to Jennifer Giron who won this week’s birthday watch from Julienne Jewelry of Mesilla.  The birthday party is at 7:55 each weekday morning.

The 101 number one song of the day was this close to not happening because when the producer played a portion of the song for the superstar singer, she said adamantly, “I can NOT do that!” Well she ended up doing that and LIKING it!   The song had two tempos and the first part was no problem for the diva. It started off slow and sultry and that fit her style to a “T” but when things picked up, she balked. But producer Hal Davis was ready. He switched the lighting in the studio and turned on the strobe light and she took off like a rocket. It wasn’t that she didn’t like uptempo stuff – she done plenty of that in her long and successful career but this was DISCO! She ended up liking it a lot and so did the rest of America. On June 21, 1976 it was the number one song in America for Diana Ross (Love Hangover)

Looks like Las Cruces City Manager Terrence Moore is looking for greener pastures.   He’s leaving at the end of the year.

Speaking of city news, council will meet today to discuss, among other weighty issues, a $50 monthly fee for a prime reserved parking space in front of City Hall to a hot dog vendor.  That sounds like a pretty good deal to us.  We’re thinking of getting a cart and a food license.

The news in the Gulf of Mexico is still awful but at least BP CEO Tony Hayward is getting some down time (and part of his life back.)   But he’s taking all kinds of shots in the media this weekend after taking a day off to race his yacht in a regatta in England.

Not to be out-done – President Obama and Vice-President Biden spent Saturday golfing.

Here they are warming up outside the White House before heading out to the links.    The President’s advisors told him to spend all his time over the weekend concentrating on the Gulf. I’m thinking he misunderstood.

And finally, Arizona announced over the weekend that they will NOT use the 1.25-million dollars in stimulus money they were given to build a bridge for squirrels to cross a busy mountain road. The rare squirrels are being hit by cars at a rate of five a year…and the state was going to build them a bridge above the road. But once word got out about the money – they backed off…saying they’ll find a better use for the funds – or return the money to Washington. If they’re smart, they’ll keep the money and spend about $200-thousand dollars per squirrel…to give each one a little yellow reflective vest.
