…Farah Fawcett passed away after her long battle with cancer. Most of us first remember her from this picture-
A few hours later news broke of the sudden death of Michael Jackson. Many of us remember him first as a phenomenally talented little boy.
Today is Sense of Humor in Bed Appreciation Day. Today is Take Your Dog to Work Day.
Speaking of dogs, there are many at the Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley who need good homes. Bessie (pictured below) is a five year old female mix who is among them. She was in our studios this morning.
Before today’s 101 number one song of the day there was rock music and there was folk music but after its release a whole new genre was created that influenced and spawned a generation of musicians and super groups which included Crosby, Stills and Nash, the Eagles, the Flying Burrito Brothers and more. The impetus for the change was electrifying a Bob Dylan song with a 12 string Rickenbacker guitar. Jim McGuinn was inspired to get his first electric 12 string after he saw George Harrison play one in A Hard Day’s Night. McGuinn formed a group with friends Gene Clark, David Crosby and others. Oddly enough, the only member of the group that actually recorded today’s featured song was McGuinn because of a lack of studio time. Producer Terry Melcher – son of actress Doris Day – hired the best studio musicians of the day which included Glen Campbell and Leon Russell in order to hasten the process. The result was the first folk rock song and a number one song for a new group which reached the top this week in June 1965 for the Byrds “Mr Tambourine Man.
First we heard that Al Gore was having an affair with the ex-wife of actor/writer Larry David. That could have been what led to Gore’s divorce. But now we find out he was the target of a sex crime investigation in Portland, Oregon in 2007. A Portland massage therapist accused Gore of groping her, kissing her and making unwanted sexual advances in his hotel room. Police confirmed the report – but said nothing happened, because the woman dropped the complaint. Oh yeah, she described the former VP as a “crazed sex poodle.”
-Apparently she wouldn’t ‘rub him the wrong way’…
At CNN’s website…they have a list of the Ten Most Overrated Things in America. Pretty interesting list, with the most overrated thing in America being the iPad. They say it’s cool – but definitely not worth the money. The rest of the Top Ten Most Overrated Things in America – Saturday mail delivery, 3-D movies, frequent buyer programs, cable TV, Toyota, LeBron James, Silly Bandz, the Lost finale and energy drinks.
Speaking of iPad and Apple, we have the story of Apple Computer’s third original partner. When Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak started the company, there was a third partner, named Ron Wayne. He owned 10% of the original company, with Jobs and Wozniak each owning 45%. It was set up that way so he’d be the deciding vote if there was ever an argument over running the company. Wayne says he came up with the original Apple logo and worked on their company manual. But he sold his stock for $800 right after they incorporated because he was worried the company would go under and he’d end up owing money. His 10% share of the company would be worth twenty billion dollars today. Instead he lives on his social security checks and dabbles in coin collecting. Here’s a recent picture-
-Yeah – he could have had a lot more coins.
So just what is an American car? Japanese automakers build five out of the top 10 cars and trucks sold in the U.S. that have the most American-made parts, according to Cars.com. The website's annual American-Made Index ranks the most-American vehicles based on the percentage of parts that are made domestically, where they are assembled and how popular they are with U.S. buyers. Toyota claimed three of the top 10 spots. Toyota also snagged the top spot, with the Camry having the most U.S.-made parts of any vehicle sold in the country.
The Ford F-150 went from the top spot a couple of years ago to being totally left off the list. While the F-150 is still assembled in the U.S., its domestic parts content fell to 55%. In the past, it’s had a domestic parts content of around 80%. Cars.com 2010 American-Made Index:
1. Toyota Camry
2. Honda Accord
3. Ford Escape
4. Ford Focus
5. Chevrolet Malibu
6. Honda Odyssey
7. Dodge Ram 1500
8. Toyota Tundra
9. Jeep Wrangler
10. Toyota Sienna
This has to be good news for American car parts makers.
