Changing the world…

globe

That’s a pretty daunting task but some middle school students from Las Cruces have joined the Siemens We Can Change the World Challenge on the Discovery Channel and the Alpha Red team from Zia Middle and one student from Camino Real have been chosen above all others in New Mexico as finalist for the team’s project on the endangered Mexican gray wolves. Along with mentor Gloria Holzhausen, the team consists of Patrick Blevins, Rose Choneska, Amelia Hamilton and Rosa Ulibarri. Congratulations to all. Here they are in the 101 Gold studios this morning.

The 101 number one song of the day was inspired by a busy schedule. The guys who wrote it had trouble making time… to make time. The year was 1967 and Felix Cavaliere and Eddie Brigati were enjoying their success as leaders of a hot new band out of New York City. The only downside was they were working so hard and so long they didn’t get much of an opportunity to get together with their girlfriends. However, there was at least one day a week that they could relax and make time to make time. And that is the subject of the song which rose to the top of the charts on May 20, 1967 for the Rascals… “Groovin’”

Kentucky Fried Chicken’s ‘Double Down’ sandwich…the two chicken breast sandwich with no bun – is so successful, they’ve announced they’re going to continue to sell it. Originally, the sandwich was a limited time offer – with the promotion ending this week. But they will keep the Double Down around…after selling ten million of them in six weeks. This is great news. Unless, of course – you’re a chicken.

A 72-year old woman in South Carolina was late for a hair appointment. At least that was her excuse when police pulled her over after careening down the highway at 100 miles an hour. Yeah – she’s now awaiting a court date for reckless driving. Hey, if careening down the highway at 100 miles an hour doesn’t curl your hair…we doubt the hairdresser is going to have any luck.

The President is going to give the commencement address at Kalamazoo High School in Michigan. He plans to shake hands with every graduating senior – but there are conditions. Each senior has to provide the Secret Service with their birth date, Social Security number and proof of citizenship.

The Secret Service realizes that’s pretty awkward considering the President’s stand on the Arizona immigration law. But they say that’s always been a condition of getting that close to the President. Yeah – so you shouldn’t ask an illegal alien in Arizona for proof of citizenship. A 17-year old kid in Michigan…fair game.

Here’s another reason for wine lovers to celebrate - new research out of Paris finds people that drink a half a bottle of wine a day…are healthier than people that don’t drink at all. They discovered moderate wine drinkers…people that drink a half bottle a day…have a lower risk of developing heart disease, less stress, a lower body mass index and experience less depression. The only thing I don’t get…then why don’t winos look healthier?
