Play Ball!

We spent some time this morning with Las Cruces native and major league umpire Doug Eddings. Here he is discussing some of the finer points of baseball with Manny Ramirez…

Did you ever wonder if umpires root for a particular team? We asked Doug that and without missing a beat he said, “Yes I do. It’s the Miami Dolphins!” Good answer Doug. He’ll be on the road soon when major league baseball opens its 2010 season but when he’s at home in New Mexico, he operates Brigid’s Cross Irish Pub in Picacho Hills. http://www.lascrucespub.com/

Speaking of baseball, President Barack Obama is set to throw out the first pitch at the Washington Nationals’ home opener next week. Tell you how bad the Nationals are…their manager already said he’s hoping the President goes at least five innings…

Today is Check For Change in Every Coin Return You Pass Day. Longtime local TV weatherman Ted Bender was famous for checking coin returns everyday.

Today is Doctors' Day. On this date in 1842 Dr. Crawford Long of Jefferson, Georgia, first used ether to prevent patient discomfort during surgery.

Today is Take A Walk in the Park Day. Don’t forget to join us at Young Park this Saturday for Springfest 2010. It’s the “greatest egg hunt in the great southwest!”

When the 101 number one song of the day was released people wondered could this group possibly do what no one else ever had? The answer was a resounding yes! The group had just scored three straight number ones and no one in the history of Billboard’s Top 100 had ever recorded 4 straight chart toppers. So this one was one for the record books. Lamont Dozier who co-wrote the song with Brian and Eddie Holland remembers that it all started with a fight he was having with his girlfriend. He was always looking for lyrics and often would stop a conversation when something struck him and run to the piano to start writing a song. That’s exactly what happened when he uttered a phrase which struck them both as funny and consequently ended the argument. That phrase became the title of a song which was at number one on March 30, 1965 for the Supremes and the phrase was: Stop in the name of love!

Do you ever get upset when your computer takes a couple extra seconds to complete a function? Or maybe the microwave is taking too long to make the popcorn? Researchers now say fast food is to blame. They say that over the decades, fast food has come to represent a culture of time efficiency and instant gratification. They say we now expect efficiency and speed – even when time isn’t a factor in the context of what we’re doing. I know exactly what they’re saying…because I’ve been guilty of it myself. I have gone out to a beautiful spot to watch the sunset…and then sat there thinking, ‘Well –come on already…go down!!!’ That’s not right.

In China…they’ve found a new dinosaur…which they say is the ancient ancestor of the modern road runner…from 85-million years ago. -And even more incredible…the dinosaur was being chased…by what appears to be the ancient ancestor of the modern day coyote…

And finally, Trinity University is having a little trouble as graduation approaches. One of their students is objecting to the college’s diplomas. The writing on the diplomas has the words, ‘in the year of our Lord, 2010.’ The Muslim student says that assumes all the students believe in Jesus…and the school isn’t being inclusive. That student is in for a huge shock when he finally realizes, after four years, what the “Trinity” in Trinity University stands for.
